For all the book lovers in the Kansas City area, a trip to Rainy Day Books in Fairway is a must! This local bookstore has a great selection of books, but it’s best feature is the quantity and quality of the book signings/author events in the Kansas city area.

Rainy Day Books hosts local authors as well as highly recognizable ones. Usually the event is around $25, but you get a copy of the book and have a chance to get it signed. The author usually speaks for 30 minutes and then does the book signing. The only thing is, the more well known an author is, the more likely the event is to sell out! Olathe Theatre To Open New Concept

AMC Studio 30 will open it’s new concept in movie-going, Fork & Screen on October 31, 2008 at the AMC Studio Theatres in Olathe, Kansas.

AMC has transformed an entire wing of the Olathe theater into Fork & Screen, which includes:
- Casual, in-theater dining and entertainment
- Cinema Suites, an upscale in-theater dining and entertainment option
- MacGuffins, a bar and lounge area.

Fork & Screen will feature eight auditoriums reserved for customers 18 and older and minors accompanied by a parent or guardian. Customers 21 and older can upgrade to one of three Cinema Suites auditoriums featuring reserved seating.

Olathe’s Getting A Conference Center

Olathe just announced plans for a 11 story hotel and conference center that will be going in near K-10 and I-435, that is actually just a couple miles from my home in Olathe!  The hotel will be an Embassy Suites and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2010.

Interestingly though, the Olathe City Council approved a 100% property-tax abatement for 10 years AND the hotel will not have to pay the city’s hotel tax for 20 years. I guess that is the price of a convention center for Olathe!

The new development is called Corporate Ridge and many buildings are already completed which include: Terracon, Farmers Insurance Group,Intrust Bank, Health Ridge Fitness Center, the National Board for Respiratory Care and Garmin International.

Olathe Farmer’s Market Opens Soon!

The weather is finally getting warmer, and local farmers will soon be bringing their crops, plants, herbs and more to the various Farmer’s Markets around the Kansas City area. The Olathe’s Farmers’ Market will open at 7 a.m. on Saturdays from May 3 through October 11.  The market is located at the corner of Poplar and Kansas Ave. – just one block north of Santa Fe.

For those of you who like shopping during the week, beginning at 3 p.m. June 4 through Sept. 24, the market will be open on Wednesdays.  

Farmer’s Markets are great ways to support local farmers and get fresh produce for much cheaper than the local grocery store. So stop by your Olathe Farmer’s Market!
